This is a full day course conducted at OPC's offices and presented by experienced drafters. Course materials are provided.
The Legislative Design Course (LDC) builds on the Legislation Process Course (LPC). While the LPC focuses on the process of developing legislation, the LDC takes a closer look at some of the complex issues that often arise in legislative projects.
The course costs $900 per individual (GST not applicable). Morning and afternoon tea is provided.
The Legislative Design Course covers the following topics:
- Selected issues in legislative design, including constitutional issues, the use of automated decision-making and constraints in instrument-making powers
- Understanding Acts of general application, including the Acts Interpretation Act 1901, Legislation Act 2003 and the Criminal Code Act 1995
- Understanding and instructing on commencement, application, transitional and savings provisions
- Understanding and instructing on consequential amendments
Prerequisites
Completion of the Legislation Process Course. Please note that only staff of Australian Government agencies are eligible to attend these courses.
As places are limited, priority will be given to APS employees who are likely to be instructing OPC in the near future.
